Turkish bulldozers raze 1,000 years of Rom history

Ferdi Celep sat on a sofa surrounded by the debris of his life, watching city workers empty clothes and furniture from a row of two dozen colourful houses huddled against the Byzantine battlements of Istanbul's old city.

Within hours, the last remnants of a thousand years of Rom history were wiped out by bulldozers.

Anti-riot police supervised this final phase last week of the demolition of Sulukule, a neighborhood on the European bank of Istanbul once home to a vibrant community of musicians and artists whose rhythmic songs and belly dancing served as the city's musical heart.

Similar scenes have been repeated across the country as municipalities, supported by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), drive home a programme of urban renewal, destroying ramshackle and often unsanitary housing in favour of new tower blocks, often many kilometers (miles) outside localities.

Government Leaving Roma Children Uneducated and Homeless

After the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality in cooperation with the Housing Development Administration of Turkey, or TOKİ, and Fatih Municipality pushed the button to launch the urban transformation project in a historic Roma neighborhood bulldozers demolished 80 percent of the area. Their target this time was a children’s workshop.

Bulldozers were once again seen on Sulukule district’s dusty and muddy streets. Driving past decrepit houses and residents surrounding fires in old garbage bins trying to keep warm, their target this time was home to a children’s workshop.

Shunted aside by Istanbul’s rising prosperity

In a small house on a street strewn with litter and lined by ruins of buildings whose inhabitants have already left, Goksel Gulkoperan was waiting for his own eviction this week. Mr Gulkoperan was given until today to leave the house near the ancient city walls of Turkey’s metropolis, Istanbul, or risk being thrown out.

“I don’t know where to go,” Mr Gulkoperan said. His home, like the rest of the poor neighbourhood of Sulukule, an old Istanbul quarter that once was a popular nightlife centre and is known for its predominantly Roma population, is to be torn down to make room for luxury apartments, hotels and shopping centres.

Another Sulukule is Possible

Sulukule is the most ancient Roma neighborhood in the world. It has been host to the Roma community for centuries. As a consequence of the implementation of urban renewal policies, the Fatih district municipality have started evicting hundreds of people out of their homes.

As the consequence of this “gentrification” project, not only Roma people are dispersed throughout the city and their culture is lost but also poverty is transferred to the other regions of Istanbul without developing any real solutions in the neighborhood. Right to shelter is also ignored as the new housing offered has high costs for the Romani people to meet.

Recently, a group of volunteers has developed an alternative plan for Sulukule.
